This is a discussion board from The Washington Post website; people are giving personal opinions on who was the winner of the debate. There are many contradictory opinions, who do you think the winner was?
Welcome to Mr. Franz's blog. The blog will be used by Mr. Franz's 3rd and 5th period AP Government classes (located somewhere east of the Mississippi River), as well as for the political musings of Mr. Franz.

Alrighty. To start things off, i now hate the word "FUNDAMENTALlY". I feel like the word was used a good fifty times and really... how hard is it to switch things up and say something like " One of the main BASIC differences between us is.." or "I ESSENTAILLY want to do this rather than that". Like really. But fine, whatever. It was evident that Obama was definately on top of his stuff while McCain i think came up short. McCain claims to know alot about foreign affairs but during the debate i feel like he struggled a bit under that topic. If you were looking for a winner out of the two i, along with yahoo "Grading the Debate", would say Obama killed it.
I think Obama came out on top. I agree with what some of the posters in that discussion said, that Obama might have been a bit disrespectful, but after all, this is politics. On the other hand, even though foreign affairs was the subject McCain sought, he seemed to be unable to "beat" Obama. I was surprised by that.
From what I saw of the debate they both looked nervous and McCain didn't really look at Obama when he talked. McCain definitly has more experience and knows much more about foreign affairs but he doesn't get his point out as clearly as Obama does and therefore he is less believable.
From what i watched of the debate, it seemed that John McCain did a good job of staying on the offensive the whole time versus Obama, which in turn kept Obama from being able to throw many punches of his own. I wasnt very impressed by what either candidate had to say about the economic situation right now, but i did think that Obama made a very strong point when he said that even though McCain thinks he can save $18 billion in federal earmarks, he is going to give back $300 million dollars in the form of tax breaks to large corporate companies. Overall, it seems that this debate was not won by either candidate. A tie, however, seems favorable for Obama since he is currently ahead in the poles and a tie does not loose him any ground. Also, Obama showed he can go toe-to-toe with McCain over issues of foreign policy and the economy, which are supposedly McCain's strengths.
I only watched some of the debate and I thought it was just annoying. 95% of the time was spent bashing each other and trying to make one another look stupid. All they did was make themselves look stupid. Although they both made valid points, I think McCain won this debate because he really showed his experience and how much he knows about foreign affairs and the conflicts we are involved in.
I was expecting a lot more out of McCain. It just felt like he was claimed to know so much more and be way more experienced than he presented himself to be.
Also, in debating, my biggest pet peeve is when one of the people starts laughing or smiling in a sort of 'you're such a dumbass' kind of look. McCain did that the entiiiree time. and even by the end of it, Obama stooped to his level and did it too.
Obama also presented himself much more professional and presidential than McCain.
I think I've made my extreme liberal ways obvious..so I'm just going to end on...Obama won!
I saw a lot of polls on who the winner was and obviously McCain won 80% to 20% on fox news because it is a republican station but in my opinion he did win. I thought he did a great job of responding to the issues and stating what he thought Obama was doing wrong and he called him out many times. I thought his only flaw was not recognizing the pros of Senator Obama and just the cons. Obama, on the other hand, did a good job of this and i think many people respect that about him. Obama seemed much more passive about arguing with McCain about issues and I think that was a flaw on his part. Overall i think McCain came out on top, but not by much.
Of what I saw of the debate, both candidates were making good points. I don't know that there was necessarily a winner or a loser because I thought they both did a really good job. However, I did feel that a lot of McCain's points and promises were old outdated. Also, I felt that he kept on saying that Obama didn't understand this or that whereas Obama kept saying "McCain and I agree on" this and this. It just made Obama a little bit more likeable.
Also, towards the end, McCain was faltering a bit and I wasn't quite sure exactly what he was saying. It was definitely interesting to watch though. Thumbs up for both candidates.
I agree with baraldino. It seems hat neither candidate "won" this political debate. It rather seemed that this debate focused around each candidate attempting to make a personal and confident impression upon the American people and their respective platforms. I would personally say that McCain was far more convincing (economically-wise) yet Obama has the natural gift to connect with people and inject confidence into the American soul, but this is just my two cents.
