Obama's Timetable Adjustment?

Senior US military officials will most likely advise Barack Obama to adjust his campaign promise to withdraw troops from Iraq by mid 2010 to a later date. Concerns involving the movement of equipment and troops and Iraqi security would complicate the withdrawal process. The Iraqi government has asked US troops be pulled from Iraqi cities by 2009 and completely out of Iraq by 2012. General Raymond Odierno stated the withdrawal can and will occur but must be done "slowly, in a deliberate way, so we don't give back the gains we've had."

Its a good thing that there is plans to finally pull the troops out. However I do agree that it has to be done slowly and carefully. I'm not quite sure how stable the new Iraqi government is and whether or not it will be able be able to support itself once the troops are out short of bloodshed. The removal of armed forces could be more problematic than when armed forces first entered Iraq, and the scene could very easily turn grim

Although I do think that pulling the troops out should be done slowly and carefully, it doesn't sound very good to me that they're planning to change the timetable so that the projected end date is later. Yes, we need to be careful about the new Iraqi government, but is it necessary to stay there for a longer amount of time?

Less than a week after the election, it already seems that Obama is changing some of the promises he made to the American people. While we cannot know if he sincerely meant this promise during the campaign, this may not bode well for other promises made during the campaign.

Iraq is like this pimple. It's annoying, socially unacceptable, and you just want it to go away. And like a pimple, you have two options. You can either pick at it and watch it explode or you can leave it alone and watch it reak havoc on everything. Your other option is to just treat the damn thing directly and watch it go away on its own. Then learning from such an experience, you finally know that you need to use preventative measures to prevent from ruining your life.
